Periodontal Therapy

Gingivitis (gum inflammation) and periodontitis (inflammation of gums and supporting structures of the tooth such as ligaments and bone) are the two main forms of periodontal disease. Periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in many adults. More than 75% of North Americans over 35 years of age have some form of periodontal disease.Although many are infected, few know they actually have the disease. In a recent study, 8 out of 10 people surveyed believed they did not have periodontal disease, 7 out of 10 exhibited one or more symptoms.

Gingivitis

Periodontitis can be caused by many factors including poor oral hygiene, hormonal imbalances, pregnancy, diabetes, poor immune system etc. Good oral hygiene and regular dental cleaning are essential in the prevention and early detection of the disease which sometimes develop without any warning signs.

Depending on the severity of the periodontitis, treatment may include hand and/or ultrasonic scaling, gum surgery, laser treatment, prescribed medications and personalized home care instructions.
